I wasn’t scared, and I was not alone.
I was privileged to be part of Campbelltown Heritage Tours conducted by Andrew Allen, the local studies librarian from Campbelltown Library.

Aboriginal Education

This Semester our Aboriginal girls have participated in a number of exciting school and Community events. Term 1 saw some of our girls perform at our 175th Anniversary Mass. A Voice for the Voiceless

The College Assembly conducted on Tuesday 23 June had a definite and important focus. It began with the raising of awareness of the plight of refugees and asylum seekers. In particular, the members of the St Patrick’s Social Justice Action Group wished to draw attention to the distresses experienced by children in detention. It remains a scandal that there are still children held in detention centres on Naru and Manus Island. They experience harsh conditions, as well as the traumas of having left their own, familiar country.

Our Christian baptism bestows upon us many gifts as well as responsibilities. A significant responsibility that comes with being baptised—and, therefore, a committed follower of Christ—is the call to service. At the Last Supper, Jesus washed the feet of the Apostles and then urged them to be as servants to one another. A significant act of service within the Church is the ministry of distribution of Holy Communion. To that end, Year 10 and 11 students were invited to a training day to equip themselves with the skills to distribute Holy Communion during Masses. The following is a recount of the day’s events and their significance written by Year 11 student Rosie L.

Cabramatta Peace Day 2015

On Friday 13 November, I was given the opportunity to take 10 girls from the St Patrick’s Social Justice Group to attend the annual Cabramatta High School Peace Day. A very beautiful and inspiring ceremony was conducted honouring many multicultural groups of the school. The 2015 Sydney Peace Day recipient is Mr George Gittoes. Some of the main messages he gave were that “we are creators, not destroyers” and that “creativity is free”. Back at school, the girls encouraged the pastoral groups to stand in solidarity for peace and write their God-given talents on A3 paper to show how they can be Creative for Peace. Some of the reflections from the girls who attended are below for you to read.

"Where are you going?" asks Jesus.

Retreats are a significant experience for people of all ages. However, they are especially important for young people because research indicates that the later teenage years are a time of life when we are most open to spirituality.

Dear Parents and Friends of St Patrick's College Community,
The flush of purple from the jacaranda trees around Sydney tells us that we are moving towards advent and the Christmas season in the church. 175th Anniversary Mass - A Parent's Reflection

On Friday 13 March, I attended the Mass at St Mary's Cathedral, to celebrate 175 years of St Patrick's College.
It was such a treat to be there, seeing all the girls gathered as a community, celebrating the history of their school and having the opportunity to share their talents, brought with it a great sense of significance.

From the Principal

This is the last edition of the Inside Out for this term. I hope you enjoyed the commemorative issue that was posted to you with your daughter’s interim report during the last two weeks.

Camp Gallipoli

Last Friday, 24 April, four students and I travelled to the Entertainment Quarter at Moore Park to take part in Camp Gallipoli.

Year 10 Students Commit to Community Service

Community Service is the offering of our time and effort to assist those in need. For students in a Catholic school, learning about social justice does not occur only in the class room. Practical, ‘hands on’ experiences of social justice make it real for our students and therefore is a significant way of making it relevant to them. As a pledge to this level of education, St Patrick’s is committed to an effective Community Service experience for our girls.

Year 11 Half Year Exams

Year 11 Exam period to begin Week 3

From The Principal

Term 2 certainly has had a very wet and soggy start. I hope you have not sustained any damage to your property during the wild winds and the hard rain. Watching the girls return to school as they battled the elements was difficult, however they soldiered on and their dampness and discomfort was alleviated as they caught up with friends and exchanged their stories of their Easter break.

Wollongong Diocesan Cross Country

The St Patrick’s College Cross Country team once again headed to Wilandra in Nowra to contest the Wollongong Diocesan Cross Country Championships. Unfortunately we were not at full strength due to illness and injury as well as the timing of the Year 9 camp, however the girls that were in attendance performed extremely well and did the College proud.

Wollongong Diocesan Swimming Championships

On 12 March St Patrick’s sent a very strong swim team to contest the Wollongong Diocesan Swimming Championships. St Patrick’s has been the Champion Girls’ School for the last 4 years however some significant rule changes implemented at the end of 2014 meant that it was going to be tough for us to regain the trophy for a 5th straight year. Our strength at this carnival was the depth and consistency of our swimmers, however the fact that we could only enter one student per race was going to play a crucial role in our title defense.

From the Principal

Throughout the month of May the College processes the applications for girls seeking enrolment at St Patrick’s College. Last Friday a number of staff assisted with the interviews of Year 5 and 6 students. On Thursday and Saturday we held auditions, interviews and tests for those students applying for scholarships. When asking why the girls want to come to St Patrick’s it is inspiring to hear of their desire to achieve their best in their studies, they speak of the opportunities offered at the College and they speak about the best chance they have to become the young women they wish to become.

Careers Invitation

As the term seems to be rapidly hurtling towards the end, I would like to invite students from the Senior School to attend a Careers Evening here at the College on 10 June, 4.30pm to 6.30pm. This will not be a typical careers stall market, rather what I have organised is a number of women from different career backgrounds to come and talk to the girls about their career journey and where it has led them to. There will be four half hour sessions where students will be able to move to different venues to hear talks from these guest speakers. At the same time MWLP will be running another session of the “Parents as Career Transition”. This seminar was run last term and was well received by those who attended. If, as a parent, you would like to attend this seminar, please contact me here at the College.

Meanwhile please see some upcoming events you may be interested in.

I recently attended the NSW Catholic School Principals Conference in Dubbo. A number of international speakers were present and they explored the notion of learning for this new millennium.

Who do you say that I am?

From Wednesday 13 May until Friday 15 May, all Year 11 students underwent a Retreat experience at Galston Gorge. Retreats are fundamentally different to camps in that a retreat’s focus is on spiritual nourishment and growth.

From the Principal

I recently attended the First Profession of Tuata Terawete and Juniko Toaua. These are two young women, from Kirabati who made their commitment to join the community of Good Samaritan sisters. It was a beautiful ceremony filled with ritual and symbolism around the vows of stability, conversion of life and obedience.

Social Justice at St Patrick's

One of the demands of being a Christian is how we respond to the challenges we face with issues of justice.

Vote of thanks from the Kenny and Chisholm House Captains

The success of a team does not come from the act of a single person. It takes everyone’s enthusiasm, dedication and participation and that is exactly what I have seen from my beautiful Kenny girls throughout the year

Duke Of Edinburgh Bronze Award

This year 32 of our Year 9 students enrolled in the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award. For many the
commencement of this program was at the Year 9 Camp at the beginning of May where the first two
days were taken up with the Practice Journey component of the award. This involved hiking through
bush, learning navigation and outdoor skills, camping out overnight and cooking their own meals.

From the Principal

It is hard to believe we are at the finish of Term 2 . Where has the first half of this year gone? When I look at the Year 7 girls, I can see their confidence and self assurance has grown over the semester. When I look at the Year 12 young women, I can see the nervousness of an unsure future and the excitement of new adventures ahead. For these, and all the girls across the years groups, the College continues to offer an education that prepares and emboldens them for a rich and fulfilled life.

Language Perfect World Championships Success

Fifty two students at St Patrick’s College recently participated in the Language Perfect World Championships. This is an online competition held over two weeks where students complete vocabulary and grammar exercises that earn them points. Students must get a number of points in order to receive an award.
